Metalocalypse: Dethklok - The Dethalbum

In the past there have been a few tv show musical acts get into the real world mainstream by putting out good music and having a huge marketing tool via their tv show. Such groups as The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, The Monkees and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have all thanked their popular tv show for boosting record sales. The trend now continues with Dethklok from the hit Adult Swim tv show, Metalocalypse.

If you haven't watched the show, do it. You'll be doing yourself a favor. It doesn't matter if you like death metal or even rock for that matter, the show is hysterical. There's tons of gore as well, which makes me laugh no matter what situation it's in, so I might be a little biased. However, you must be a death metal fan to enjoy this album.

If you are a fan of the show you've already heard their stuff. They typically play a song on each episode. It was through the show that I fell in love with not only the awesome hardcore rocking they do, but the killer (literally) videos that accompany the songs. It was a great surprise to me when I found out that they put out a CD with their tunes on it and an even greater surprise to find it at a local Best Buy.

I've had the CD in my car since I bought it roughly 4 days ago and I can't get enough of it. The music is something that has been lacking in metal these days... hard guitar riffs, killer drums, screaching guitar solo's and ATTITUDE. Real attitude.

The only downfall I have is Nathan Explosion's voice. While it's completely deep and dark and all of those awesome things that make great death metal singers great, it's so deep and gravely that you can't understand anything he's singing. Typically that's how you want your death metal singers, but Dethklok's lyrics are worth following along to so much that it's actually a downfall to not understand what Nathan's singing. That's why the 1 point dropped off of the final score for me. However, they cover their asses with a full book of lyrics for you to read. In reading the lyrics I found that they really weren't just putting out an album to put something out for some late night cartoon, they were going for the kill with an all around awesome death metal album, and I think they accomplished it.

With all of that said if you're a fan of death metal, pick this one up, pop it in your CD player (or record player, it's on vinyl too) and crank the fucking volume. You won't regret it. This one is brutal.
